Imagine 2016 Magento Commerce
YES! Magento is back!
It was that time of the year again, Imagine or Magento’s annual conference in Las Vegas. I attended all but one conference – the inaugural Magento conference in L.A. but joined very single one after that.
Some of the conferences have been great, others disappointing and a couple were simply put a waste of time and money, so I was hoping that this one was going to be good – It Was!
Ebay acquired Magento in May of 2011 and all of us were like: “What is going to happen to the platform?”
For those whom do not know what happened, it basically turned into a big mess. You can read a little more here http://techcrunch.com/2011/06/23/ebay-acquired-magento-for-over-180-million-but-not-everyone-is-smiling/
Ebay’s acquisition meant a big corporate entity taking over a proven platform and it’s culture. The latter ended up being the part that Ebay messed up on. They wanted their own platform, called X.commerce (we even bought the xdevelopers.com domain) and rather than focusing on Magento. This roller coast ride took 3 years and in May 2015 sold the eBay Enterprise commerce technology including Magento’s e-commerce – The Magento community cheered! https://www.internetretailer.com/2015/07/17/ebay-sells-its-ebay-enterprise-e-commerce-technology-business
The biggest open question that remained for the last 4 years was the release of M2 or Magento 2.0. Throughout 2010 – 2015, Magento and Ebay had been talking about the new M2 release, well it finally happened in November 2015 when they releases the M2 beta version. http://magento2-demo.nexcess.net/
What do you need to know?
I know what you are thinking. You just spent a lot of money in 2015 on a Magento 1.9.2 release and now Magento 2 is out on the market. Should you panic? No!
I spoke with several folks at the conference and they acknowledged that Magento would support existing M1 or previous Magento versions until the end of 2018 (initially only until 2017) – THIS IS GREAT NEWS.
So what’s up with Magento 2.0? (Actually they just announced the release of Magento 2.1) Should you start designing and developing on this platform?
The answer is: It depends.
Like many software upgrades or platform upgrades, moving up to Magento 2 depends on the following:
1. Your business goals and objectives
2. Native M2 functionality or custom development
3. Third Party Applications
4. Integration to ERP or Warehousing Software
5. Shipping requirements
The good news is that for the most part, the third party providers such as Mailchimp, Shipper HQ, Avalara, Brightpearl and Aheadworks to name a few are already working hard to ensure seamless integration and are offering good support to get your M2 commerce up and running. Even if some modules or plugins are not working 100%, Cofamedia can help integrate the perfect solution.
As usual, look for reliable partners whom develop third party application. Speaking of finding third party partners, Magento also announced a new and improved Market place with better User Interface and User Experience. There is a cool video, so be sure to check it out. https://marketplace.magento.com/
It is important to understand the difference between upgrading Magento to a new version and moving to Magento 2. You cannot upgrade from Magento 1 to Magento 2. Why?
Magento 2 is a totally new framework and you can read the details here https://magento.com/blog/magento-news/new-era-commerce-innovation
For the second year running, Magento decided to host the event at the Wynn in Las Vegas, if anyone attended 2015 you will remember Steve Wynn’s rant about Ebay. Well this year it was really “Magentoesque” – Yes I invented this term. No more Ebay, No more BS, just Magento Commerce.
Jamie Clarke opened up the event the same way he closed it in 2015. The man is simply awesome!
Kai Schmidhuber and Kian Gould worked on one of the most advanced user experiences ever by creating Fraport, using the Magento Commerce platform. You have to check this out. http://www.fraport.com/en.html
The highlight of the Keynote was Magic Johnson. I have met Magic a couple of times, once in Venice beach at a bikini contest in 1987 and with the dream team in 1992. Magic Johnson is Magic – the man is awesome. Did he talk about E-commerce? No, but who cares.
The legendary party was epic with lots of drinks, food, cigars and 90% dudes. Would be nice to see some more girls at these events to be honest.
There is a good video that summarized this year’s event, which you can see here
